Mizdirection didn't look like a horse making her first start in more than five months winning the Turf Sprint. The 4-year-old filly, 2-for-2 over the Santa Anita downhill turf course, settled outside and to the rear of the field, came into the stretch wide, and then rallied to win by half a length under urging by jockey Mike Smith. Post-time favorite Unbridled's Note finished second, 1 1/4 lengths in front of Reneesgotzip.

Shanghai Bobby gave his fans a thrill or two in the Juvenile. Taking the lead with three furlongs remaining, the 2-year-old piloted by Rosie Napravnik had to fend off a determined He's Had Enough twice in the stretch, once at the eighth pole and again as the pair neared the wire, digging in to win by a head. With Shanghai Bobby's victory, Napravnik became the second woman jockey to win a Breeders' Cup flat race.

Animal Kingdom, making his first start since February 2012, surged late and split rivals to place.

The Argentinean Breeders' Cup Challenge winner overtook post-time favorite Atigun near the sixteenth pole and drew away to win by 4 1/4 lengths, giving jockey Aaron Gryder his first Breeders' Cup victory. Grassy overtook Atigun for second.

At the top of the stretch, she boldly moved from sixth to first, splitting foes along the way. Under urging from jockey Christophe Lemaire, she continued to increase her lead late, winning by 1 1/4 lengths over Watsdachances and Summer of Fun.

Beholder was formidable from the start, taking a clear lead on the first turn and setting a solid pace of :46.47 for the half and an even 1:11 for the first six furlongs. Challenged by the undefeated post-time favorite Executiveprivilege in the final furlong, Beholder responded to urging from rider Garrett Gomez, digging in to win by one length. Executiveprivilege finished 4 1/4 lengths ahead of Dreaming of Julia, who suffered her first career loss in crossing the wire third.
